The Divine Liturgy is the heart of the Orthodox Church’s life, celebrated each Lord’s Day, the day of the Resurrection, when the faithful gather as one body around the one table of the Lord. It is the entrance of the Church into the Kingdom of God. Through the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the holy gifts, the one bloodless sacrifice of Christ is made present among us: He is the One who offers and is offered, who receives and is distributed. We offer to God His own from His own, and He gives Himself back to us in Holy Communion, the food of eternal life. Here heaven and earth are joined, and we are united to Christ and to one another as His one Body—a true foretaste of the Kingdom to come.
