To Whom It May Concern

My Beloved Spiritual Children,

The Family of Saint George Cathedral,

“We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers; remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ, in the sight of our God and Father...” (I Thessalonians 1:2-3)

I write after much thought and reflection. I write with hope and determination. I write this letter to all who desire to hear, to whom it may concern. This letter is an invitation to be concerned. Is not anything written already an invitation? Is not the reading of which an intentional hearing of the invitation. I write to invite you to listen and I invite you to accept what is written. It is an invitation for your benefit, to grow in wisdom, faith, and love.

We never stop growing.

First, all glory belongs to the Lord who made us from dust and by His breath made us living beings. He made us with a body and a spirit to live this earthly life in the heavenly manner He intended. He made us with a heart / mind to govern this life. He made us to work, to feed, to laugh, to comfort, to serve, to live.

We choose how to do all those things. We have made this choice. All choices have results. The child who chooses to study and the child who chooses not to study are no different. Rocks and sand are no different until we need them. The results of the choices we make are the difference.

My beloved, does not the rain fall on all? The good and the bad? Are not certain things chosen for us as children? Our name, our school, our clothes, our food, all are chosen for us when we do not yet make our own choices. When we grow and mature, we begin making our own choices. Are not parents then responsible for their children before those children mature?

Therefore, God did not create us as individuals. God created us to be a family, not a group of individuals. God created the family with a purpose, to multiply as He said in the first chapter of the Book of Genesis, "...Be fruitful and multiply, fill the Earth and subdue it, have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the Earth." (Genesis 1:28)

God gave us wisdom to choose, to differentiate, to distinguish if our choices are for the benefit of the family.

 My beloved spiritual children,

If a parent wants to make a choice which does not benefit the family, as God intended, then the choice should not be made. What God intends is for Him to be represented by the parents to the children reminding them whom they belong to and should be connected to. And yes, God intends also the parents to represent the children to Him, asking Him to grant them, the parents, more wisdom to lead the children to mature and begin their preparation to be parents themselves.

This is life. The job / duty of a family is to prepare the next generation to give birth to the following generation.

Are we preparing the next generation to do this?

Do we teach them the truth of Jesus Christ?

Do we guide them for what matters, not earthly life?

Do we instruct them to follow the Gospel of Jesus Christ?

Do we make them understand the Church Etiquette?

What do we teach?

Is teaching the important matters of life, faith, hope, love, purity, humility a priority?

Is attending Church a priority?

How do we know if it is a priority?

Easy and simple.

Is attending Church planned? Or is it automatic like breathing, eating, sleeping?

We give our children gifts, toys, vacations, clothes and fashion, sports, events, school, etc. We do this, yes. Good, we should, but with wisdom and purpose.

But how much do we give them of our faith? Is it enough to prepare them to be parents?

Do we minimize our faith?

Do we minimize the Church?

Therefore, I find it of the highest priority to ask these questions. In asking, I found many factors which affect the answers. I wish to detail a few here.

The researcher and the student in the current reality of the Arab-American society find that there is a network of close relations that brings together the society and the family in a very complex and indistinguishable fabric, and that the current situation of the Arab-American families is individual and self-interested. Discipline has become a strange part of it. Expressionism is not clear and confusing; our society has unfortunately underestimated the values of ethics, respect, and confidence in the leader and the leader has become foreign. We hear and see negative things that are alien to our values and morals, due to the absence of the spirit of community, commitment and respect, even for time.

The questioning of the question has become a normal thing, and the great things become small and the small become great. Our identity and the pillars of our families have become unclear and weak. We have entered a dark tunnel. Ethics has become very much lost.

My dear spiritual children,

For centuries, Christians played an important role in the creation and formation of the Arab Orthodox Christian identity. They worked in the field of translation, education, science, astronomy, medicine and creativity exceling in their fields. They were pioneers holding political and economic positions, many of them also at the artistic and scientific levels, literature and other fields.

All these achievements have not come from a vacuum, but have been paid for. This Arab Orthodox Christian identity has become an integral part of our history. Our identity has become a reality, a lifestyle based on land, language, history, civilization, culture, ambition, dreams, loyalty and belonging.

But in this difficult time, we are seeing a lot of confusion and inability to properly understand the concept of this great identity and how to preserve it!

Who is responsible in this society, especially the Western American society, for preserving it? How do we preserve this great legacy?

The answer is clear and frank and cannot be hidden. How can we cover the light of truth?

The answer is the Church... only the Church!

It is the place where we hear the word of life, learn how to live the faith and grow spiritually. This is the place where our children grow up, and they become more faithful, understanding, and loving, all the words of the Lord. This is the place of refuge, protection and spiritual recovery for them. The gathering of the Church is the place of advancement, encouragement, aid and identity for them. It is the compass that defines our way of life and our approach as belonging to it, because it is a source of originality, quality, vision, looking ahead and looking forward to a better future.

 My beloved,

I pray for you today: men, women, young people and children, to trust the Lord and to be faithful in the sense of the word, to instill goodness in our homes and love in our Churches, to instill learning and courage in our children, to be one body and one mind and one hand for Christ and His Church.

Here we recall the message of Saint Paul the Apostle when he said:

"For as the body is one, and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ." (I Corinthians 12:12)

We believers work together in different roles, avoiding pride in our abilities or having doubt we are even able to offer to preserve our Arab Orthodox Christian identity.

My spiritual children,

Love is gradual, as growth is gradual, therefore, love is patient, and yet, love has no time, no limits. Commitment stems from love, and you, my children, adhere to what you love and you give time and effort to what you love, therefore, love is the basis of everything.

Whom do we love?

What do we love?

In my heart, there is a never-ending desire for you, a fatherly responsibility.

My responsibility to challenge you comes from love, built on the foundation of love and hope. My great sadness and greater grief is over our loss of the Arab Orthodox Christian identity in this unique time in which conflicts, rivalries and wars have become eternal.

My dearest family,

I advise you and remind you of your duty, responsibility and liability for the importance of preserving our identity and transmitting this identity to our children.

I advise you and remind you of your duty, responsibility and liability for the Church, which has the great role of teaching, preaching, and being the high standard of life.

I have called you to be the best. I call you to be good inheritors of this identity, so you can lead our children and the generations of tomorrow to be inheritors, to be the good example which the Lord should see in us, to be witnesses to the truth and His teachings, to be teachers, missionaries, men and women of prayer.

Our ancestors lived their faith, lived their traditions, lived their customs and, in turn, taught them. We have been taught to love, to pray, to fast, to respect and to be humble, even how to dress, one of chastity and decency, reverence and respect.

Yes, we have been taught these things. These things are neither foreign nor strange.

This message has also been given to us by Christ and continuing with it is the only guarantee for our future and the future of our children.

My beloved spiritual children,

One of the most natural and affectionate titles for the Lord in the Holy Scriptures is the title of "Shepherd" and the Good Shepherd is the one who cares for the flock and finds the lost and recovers the barred, fixes the broken, heals the wounded, protecting the weak and caring for his flock with justice and equality.

My beloved,

The weight on my neck is heavy, and the sense of responsibility towards you is a great one.

I take it seriously with a heavy and moral commitment in this message to you, and this is to work with you and for you, so I invite you with a humble heart and with hopeful eyes affixed on the image of Christ with purity and holiness. I call upon you for service, humanity, and forgiveness. I invite you to remain silent and listen to the Word of God. I invite you then to speak the Word which you heard. I invite you to be committed, patient, teaching, learning and loving knowledge. I invite you to join the Church of Christ as a devoted sheep of the flock.

I invite you to the knowledge and understanding of the world. I invite you to build and work. I invite you to dream. I invite you to be ambitious. I invite you to see and look at the right things to be aware of, to have the sense of vision and insight. I invite you to accept the call to be trained soldiers who are serious, committed and ready to hear the leader and his guidance in everything related to the battle. The ship without a captain is a lost ship. And seafarers who do not trust their Lord will have their misery and loss, for it is seriousness and trust in the leader which lead to victory and safety.

In conclusion, the teacher, the leader and the good shepherd is the Father who loves His children, the leader who challenges His soldiers, the shepherd who searches for His flock. They follow Him with absolute love and great faith/trust.

My beloved, we all have the Heavenly Father, the compassionate and almighty Lord, and we have the earthly father, the ordained Priest, the teacher of the Word and the servant of the Sacraments, and a caring shepherd of God’s flock. The Priest must be aware that the Church is based on renewed, repentant and spiritually growing individuals and also a collective effort by all committed to the duty of carrying and bearing the Arab Orthodox Christian identity.

My beloved spiritual children, it is time to speed up the pace, to look forward in a spirit of rich fortitude, to open new doors of labor and great faith in the Lord Jesus Christ our God and Savior. We have to realize the requirements of our responsibility towards the Creator and the Church, and this responsibility also applies to the Priests, the laborers and leaders for our care and for the salvation of us all.

We are all sinners, we all fall at the mercy of the Lord, and we are all laborers for His glory. None of us are perfect, but it is the grace of the Lord that heals the wounded and fills all things. It is His grace which brings us to His presence. Let us come to Christ who completes our weaknesses, forgives us, builds us, and makes us true perfect children by directing our minds to our ‘big brother,’ the Lord Jesus Christ, who grants the Gospel of renewal so we may live and reign forever with Him in perfection without any sin.

I appreciate your continued hard work and effort and look forward to working with you and for you in the future. Write, my friends. The future is not written...

“The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.” Amen.

With my blessings and my love, I remain

Your father in Christ,

Father Fouad Saba
